Republicans rescue American flags that Democrats discarded.

by David Harsanyi on September 6, 2008This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.
Before McCain speaks today, veterans will haul these garbage bags filled with flags out onto the stage — with dramatic effect, no doubt — and tell the story.
“What you see in the picture I sent you is less than half of total flags,” a Republican official emailed. “We estimate the total number to be around 12,000 small flags and one full size 3×5 flag.”
I’m not sure what the DNC was supposed to do with unused hand-flags, frankly. But the Republicans are obviously questioning someone’s patriotism here.
Yes, the Democrats patriotism is being questioned. Also, the Democrats sense of decency is being questioned. How many American heroes have been buried underneath our American flag? How many more people have bled for this flag? We are talking about TWELVE-THOUSAND flags that were discarded, placed in trashed heaps, and forgotten. There is no excuse for that.
So much for the DNC’s “environmentally-conscious” convention.

UPDATE 1: Drew M. at ACE OF SPADES HQ posted the Democrats response:
Damon Jones, spokesman for the Democratic National Convention Committee, released a statement saying McCain should applaud the fact that thousands of American flags were “proudly waved” at their convention.
“But instead his supporters wrongfully took leftover bundles of our flags from the stadium to play out a cheap political stunt calling into question our patriotism,” he said.
These flags were found in trash bags inside of trash bins in Denver!
Also, sidewalks are public property, so if you leave your “trash” on the side of the curb, anyone can go through it.
UPDATE 2: RedState has more pictures of the discarded flags.

There are procedures for properly and respectfully disposing of the flag. For those that truly want to get it right, the American Legion provides a flag disposal service.
The Democrats should have deferred to them if they were unwilling to do the right thing.

You got that dog shit right…The Democrats just demonstrated what utterly treasonous pieces of DOGSHIT they really truly ARE for doing this CRAP to Old Glory…What a symbol of DISRESPECT!
Someone needs to tell Howard Dean about this shit and smack his ass upside the head with a frying pan!
When I am at the Mark Levin Fan Forum at marklevinfan.com I find that when someone uses the word “ass” it gets edited to read “Howard Dean” and if he is ignoring this problem then it’s apropos that he is seen as an ass.

Kelsey, even Boy Scouts know how to discard the American flag properly and with honor. What the Democrats have done is insane.
Democrats will probably say that this story is just a distraction from the “real issues”, but this is a real issue to me. This is a real social issue and Democrats are disrespecting my viewpoint.

Absolutely Los!
There’s absolutely no excuse for what they did.

Most of this has already been disputed by the Democrats, of course, and chances are we’ll never know the truth. But it’s also true that Republicans are probably more likely than Dems to break the law by mistreating the American flag. If interested, you can see how at http://jmcpherson.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/burn-a-flag-for-the-fourth/.

There’s a huge difference between wearing the flag as a shirt or on sporting equipment when compared to throwing the flag in trash can bins.
Which is more disrespectful, James?

Wearing the flag to me would indicate that the wearer wants to feel close to his/her country and what it stands for. Burning a perfectly good flag or throwing them in a trash can says to me that the people involved in these actions, hate what “old Glory” stands for and is to me Anti-American.

Carlos, obviously throwing one away is worse–if we knew it to be true, which neither you nor I do.
More importantly, this is an inane, irrelevant discussion in regard to the election. Are you folks suggesting Barack Obama threw flags away? That makes even less sense than the suggestion from some Dems that Sarah Palin is somehow responsible for her daughter becoming pregnant.

No, I am saying that the DNC threw away American flags.
The pictures prove this to be true.

how do you dispose of all the small flags given out? I know the proper way of a big one that is old and tattered, but the kind that are given to you on the 4th of July, parades, conventions, etc., ??? I had a small one on the 4th and gave it to somebody (stranger) because I felt weird just throwing it out. BTW, I am a Dem. and I would never do this.

If the Republicans did this, I would not flip out and call it bad. I would, however, would think that you should not do this.

Regarding people wearing the flags, it’s always given me pause when I see that because I know the flag is not supposed to be used for clothing. But it’s one of those things that I quickly get over… kind of like seeing a flag still waving at night without being lit or seeing a flag in the rain. Certainly not as big of a deal as improper disposal in a dumpster.
I doubt that the DNC had anything to do with this but what it does show is that the DNC organizers didn’t have the foresite to anticipate having to deal with the leftover flags which demonstrates to me at least, a relative lack of reverence for what the flag represents.

if you look closely, there appears to be a sticker that says “RECYCLE” and the first 3 letters of that are ripped off. Maybe they believed that they were going to recycle them. or reuse. I realize that they may of been a few thoughtless people though. Let’s not jump to conclusions.
