Reverend Joseph Lowery’s prayer.
Posted by Carlos C. on Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 at 12:23 pmRush Limbaugh talked about this prayer and it is now posted on Drudge Report:
Benediction at Obama ’s inauguration, Rev. Joseph Lowery:
‘Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around… when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen. Say Amen’…
I thought racism was finally conquered today?
UPDATE 1: Hot Air has the video
I would like to add, “Green is mean.”
Ha!
UPDATE 2: Michelle Malkin says that Reverend Lowery’s poem is part of a song. The text of the song is on Malkin’s website.
This keeps getting weirder.

The quote on Drudge (and hence your site) is WRONG!
The real quote from Lowery’s benediction is….
“…help us work for that day when black will not be asked to give back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white whill embrace what is right.”
I don’t know how (or why) Drudge got it wrong but I’m seeing it pop up all over the net. Would be great if you would correct it! Thanks.
The phrases “get in back” and “give back” sound the same due to Lowery’s speech drawl.
They dont’ sound the same.
It’s clear he said “get in back” not “give back”.
I’ve listened to the speech 10 times.
It’s interesting to me how almost every blogger
and columnist who insists he said “give back” also
say the didn’t for Obama.
Funny correlation, that one.
It made me chuckle in the face of seriousness. Spiced with equal parts of humor, compassion, and sincerity. Hopefully we can all move forward my brothers, and sisters of the human race. Today, January 20th, 2009 brought us closer together than we have ever been. May we continue to be inspired, and focused.
Thank you Mr. Obama and Rev. Lowery.
I loved it so much, I made it into a t-shirt: (NON PROFIT INTENTIONS)
If anyone wants to buy the shirt, click on Christian Mendelsohn’s name link.
This is not meant to curse Obama’s presidency - I’m sure he will do a good job. While he was not my first choice (nor was McCain), he is now president and it is the citizen’s responsibility to support him. However, his choice of ministers is consistently bad. There is a common denominator between Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Rev. Wright, and Lowery: they are all has-beens from the civil rights era. They did their best work when they were young, in a day when a man like Mr. Obama was flagrantly discriminated against. However, times have changed. Minorities has more freedom than ever, and our society is becoming more compassionate with each generation. The face of the civil rights movement has changed; there are NEW battles to win and many advances already accomplished. These guys are stuck in the past with their 1960’s civil rights rhetoric, and are unable or unwilling to let it go. When will we have truly achieved equality? When we don’t feel compelled to make a distinction about black, brown, yellow, red, or white. Obama, I am hopeful, has done that.
Obaa being president doesn’t imply equality.
Check out statistics. There is still racism in this country.
I am related to family of racists. Some part of family
lives in Eastern Washington, some in Michigan, and some
in Nebraska. All of them have very racist friends too.
People who say that Obama being elected means there is no racism are ridiculous.
It’s a wonderful hopeful sign that there is less racism. It’s
great that a majority of Americans didn’t feel racist.
But how many didn’t vote, and how many voted for
McCain because Obama was black?? I am not saying that
ALL McCain voters are racist. Not at all.
I am just saying that the possibility of some percentage
of htis country is racist is certainly NOT disproven
by Obama’s election.
Do the math.
The playing field is not equal.
It’s great that we all choose to do what’s right. But it’s
easier when life is easier. And it’s still the case that
certain people are born into easier lives in this country.
And certain people, even when born into wealth,
face racism from some percentage of the country.
Maybe it’s slight racism for some people..maybe it’s extremem fro others.
But Reverend Lowery was kicked out of town for ordering food in a diner. Imagine how that affects you. Imagine how much he must hope that the times of fear and hatred he has seen go furhter away - so yeah, white should embrace what is right.
We all should. He doesn’t say others shouldn’t too. He’s quoting a line from his younger days.
Anyway - let’s all just do justice and love mercy and say Amen.
It doesn’t seem very merciful to pick on this older gentleman for dging whites in the right direction.
I saw it too and I was thinking the same thing that jaxkat wrote.![:(](/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif)
Discrimination against the african-american very rarely occurs now. I just wish they would get over it and move on.
White people are discriminated against today because the job they apply for needs a black person to fill the position becuase of paranoia. Eventhough the white has more qualifications.
I just pray for America AND Obama.
Mr. Lowery did not deliver a prayer but a speech. It was more to justify his thoughts rather than pray. As a speech it was inaccurate at best and inflammatory at worst. He was predictable with “Yes We Can” and to denigrate the “Rich” was just one thing that discounted this entire speech. His comment about White and Yellow did more to incite more separation than unity. Rather than people seeking apologies or compensation from those who had nothing to do with bad history, Seek true unity!!
this quote is racist against white people
f@##@ off obama homos
I love racism. It gives everyone something to write about. After a few years of “reverse racism”, I hope this country will do what it should have done after giving black people civil rights… give them reparations. These reparations should be in the form of plane tickets to Africa and two goats per family.
I could not have said it better
Whackos…
AMEN!!! Well said.
