FORT MYERS, FL: A fight between two retirement home residents turned deadly Sunday and newly released police reports indicate the fight was over a blanket.
According to Fort Myers Police, Kenneth Knauf and Chrisanto Beltran were roommates at Hidden Oaks Retirement Center in the Alzheimer’s wing.
Investigators said Knauf was cold and asked Beltran to borrow a blanket. Knauf got out of bed, went to the restroom and grabbed a blanket off Beltran’s bed when he returned.
Reports say Knauf grabbed the wrong blanket and Beltran got up and fought with Knauf.
During a routine bed inspection, a staff member found Beltran lying on the floor. She and another staff member performed CPR on Beltran while waiting for an ambulance, but were unable to revive him.
When paramedics arrived, they pronounced Beltran dead and transported Knauf to Lee Memorial Hospital. He suffered black eyes and multiple cuts on his face.
Investigators do not know if charges will be brought against Knauf because he and Beltran both suffered from dementia.
Police contacted the Department of Children and Families about the incident.
The Department of Children and Families is investigating the location for the fourth time in three years.
The only time a finding was substantiated was in 2007 for improper restraints.
“One was physical injury, bruises to a patient,” said Erin Gillespie.
DCF will investigate whether there was proper supervision at Hidden Oaks.
Expect lawsuits.

Wow! You would think that such a braul of leaving black eyes and multiple cuts someone would have heard it going on. I think
it was improper supervision. BUT I guess I don’t know EVERYTHING that happened so it should be investigated.
That poor family of Knauf.
