Violence at the protest in Oslo.
OSLO (Reuters) - Oslo police detained at least 27 people on Thursday after pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian demonstrators clashed in one of the worst such outbursts in the Norwegian capital since the 1980s.
Shop windows in the city center were shattered and police repeatedly used teargas to break up groups of activists demonstrating over Israel’s crackdown in the Gaza Strip.
The violence started when about 1,000 pro-Palestinian supporters showed up at a rally sponsored by Norway’s largest opposition party in support of Israel. Television pictures showed they burnt Israeli flags and threw projectiles at police clad in body armour who separated the two groups.
“This has nothing to do with the situation in Gaza,” Johan Fredriksen, chief of staff of the Oslo police, told the website of the daily Aftenposten.
“These people came to the protest with knives, bats and Molotov cocktails,” he said, speaking about the pro-Palestinian side.
“You have to go back to the early 1980s to find a similar situation in Norway,” Fredriksen said, adding that police were still concerned about security across the city.
Clashes also took place near the Israeli embassy.
Tabloid VG on its website said that Oslo was the site of a “street fight” with groups of men throwing rocks and bottles at police. One police car was trashed and one officer injured.
Before the flare up, some 15,000 people walked through the city centre for a peaceful, torch-lit protest, police said.
I am surprised that violence at these rallies does not escalate further.
Kudos to all police men and women worldwide for keeping the peace.

The palastinians are aking for vengence. GGGGGGGGRRRRRRRR!
There is a major resurgence in the Nazi movement in Norway. It’s not suprising that they’re anti-Israel. Hating Jews and supporting Palestinian terror seems to go hand in hand.
The conclusive solution to silence radical Palestinian groups will be to establish an international military force to police Gaza and the West Bank headed by a contagion of forces from the more secular Arab countries to ensure the smooth transition to a strong Palestinian state. If there is a well crafted plan to create a Palestinian state, I think most of the Arab countries will readily send troops to help develop a viable Palestinian state.
A peaceful Middle East will definitely have a lot of ramifications. A peaceful Middle East will stem the tide and accelerate a decline in radical Islam. There is no greater hope than that the Israelis and Palestinians get tired of their tortuous past full of wars then sit down and work towards a peaceful Middle East.
Richard,
I agree that there needs to be a peaceful middle east but an international military force has never solved any problems. There was an international force in Lebanon supposedly there to prevent the rise of Organizations like Hezbollah. Despite the presence of that force, Hezbollah shelled northern Israel and Israel had to invade.
The UN is currently heavily involved in Gaza but Hamas regularly uses UN schools, vehicles, and other assets to wage war against Democratic Israel.
In light of how unsuccessful international forces have been thus far in this conflict, it’s hard for me to buy a theory that more international presence will lead to peace. Instead, I believe that the complete and unconditional surrender of Israel’s enemies is really the only event that will lead to a lasting and sustainable peace. The alternative is that organizations like Hamas and others will continue to murder Israelis under the full support or without interference from an International force such as the UN.
I am disgusted with the attitude of the norwegian government in connexion to it’s anti-israel biass. The jews of noway are law abiding citizens and most probably contributed to the welfare of Norway.
They the jewish citizens of norway were advised on Yom-Hashoah day
(The annual memorial day to the 6,000,000 jewish victims of the nazi holocaust) not to wear skull caps or wave israeli flags because the muslims wouldn’t like it, well tough luck on them. The police should give protection to their jewish citizens and allow them the curtesy which they deserve to honor the annual memorial to the jewish victims of the shoah with the full backing of the norwegian government and that means with the full protection of the law. What contributions have have the immigrant muslims made for the welfare of norway except hatred towards the jews of norway and of ‘the State of Israel. I can tell you that if I had to vist norway on business I would feel unsafe as a jew walking around the city of Oslo, I would only come with the protection of my massive dog weighing around 170kg fully trained in protecton/combat etc. nobody then would dare to attack me.
Samir,
Just stick to the United States. Here in Texas, you can carry a concealed gun… and we’re working on getting a law passed enabling us to carry guns in the open which would be a far more effective deterrent.
A friend of mine who I met through our Synagogue, has actually been attacked by anti-semites before and lucky for him, he happened to be armed at the time (he’s a professional firearms safety instructor), and he merely had to flash his weapon to de-escalate the situation.
There’s no better individual security than a well armed population. I know there’s a common aversion to firearms in the American Jewish community but in my opinion, all Jews should be armed. If we were, the massacres and attacks would become a thing of the past.
